Photographs of the mass ceremonies held in the chapel of Les Corts were regularly publicised by the regime in the annual reports of the Patronage for the Redemption of Sentences through Work.
Like many others, these are “timeless” images intended to illustrate the “spiritual assistance” offered to the inmates. The gallery also includes the only image of formation in the courtyard of Les Corts featured in the Patronage’s annual reports, as well as some photographs of choirs and artistic groups. These were frequently highlighted in the regime’s official publications about the women’s prison system, such as the weekly Redención and the annual reports of the Patronage for the Redemption of Sentences through Work.
These sanctioned artistic initiatives had a dual meaning: while providing moments of joy and entertainment, they also reinforced the solidarity and resilient spirit of the inmates.
Sports activities were another mandatory reference in the regime’s publications on the prison world. For women, basketball was the most common sport, perceived as a “feminine sport.” The formation of sports teams not only demonstrated the organisational abilities of political prisoners but also served as a vital stimulus for surviving imprisonment.
