Workplan for a monument

2016 junio

In June 2016 the Platform agreed on a wokplan for the creation of a monument for commemoration and public homage in accordance to the process already underway, with the underlying premise of a comprehensive and integrating effort of the technical, artistic, academic, municipal and civic parties involved.

With this goal in mind, the investigation into the urban context and environment carried out in December 2015 by the architecht Jordi Henrich for the project Les Corts Women's Prison Monument suggested a whole new series of ideas. One of the key proposals of this research was a very ambitious outlook in the conception of the public use of that particular area, the pedestrianisation of the section of Joan Güell street between Diagonal avenue and Europa street.

The workplan and schedule were submitted to Barcelona City Hall in June 2016, but were rejected . The initiative was succesful, however, towards exposing the call for attention at a political level for a growing popular demand.

In December 2016, Barcelona City Council's Commissioner for Memory  informed the  Plataform of their plans to organise a public bidding process for the selection of a project for a  a permanent monument  to be scheduled for construction between 2017and 2019, and allocated an area of 115 m² around the same chamfer where in 2014 the 5 monoliths for the temporary project Space for Memory had been erected, on the intersection of Carrer Europa and Carrer Joan Güell.

In January of the following year, the Platform presented to the City Hall the document entitled 'Space of Memory – Les Corts Women's Prison Monument.
